444 I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or what some call a "Mormon." I am a fully active, life-long member. I'd like to comment on this book from two perspectives: as a reader and as a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.First: as many have commented, the pace of the story is slow and the sentences short and choppy. Most of the action takes place in a month's time with flashbacks to fill in the back story. The characters are sympathetic and well-drawn. There are a lot of interesting details about the Utah Territory and frontier life in general. I'm not sure why it was called the Glovemaker as glove-making had very little to do with the story. In fact, it could have been left out completely. Samuel, the missing husband, also had a fascination with rocks that didn't seem to carry much meaning in the story but was often mentioned. These two extraneous details seemed like an odd editing choice. Either they were an afterthought (maybe to give the book a title that had nothing to do with Mormonism?), or had much more significance in earlier drafts of the story but were pared down for the sake of length.Second: reading a story about my people's history from an outsider. I appreciate that Weisgarber appeared to research a lot about the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and portrayed us in a sympathetic light. She made sure to mention the more controversial points of our history--polygamy and the Mountain Meadows Massacre. She also took pains to describe the sacred temple garment in detail. She talked about communities voting for and electing a Bishop. This is incorrect as Bishops are not elected but called by a Stake President (not The Stake Presidents as Weisgarber refers to them.) In this way, they are not answerable to the people but to God and the leaders of His church. Also, the characters seem to fear rejection and ostracization by their families if they become disaffected from the church and are labeled apostate. I'm going to research further to learn if this was a practice at that time, but is not a practice today. We are taught to love those who leave the church and believe differently from us (though we don't all practice that like we should!) Finally, in the story those who accept plural marriage believe that they will be exalted in the Kingdom of Heaven. That's the terminology we use for salvation, or the reward that waits the righteous and faithful, but we're never taught that it comes from one act. Rather, throughout our lives we strive to maintain faith and obedience, becoming ever more like our Savior and Exemplar Jesus Christ.I debated between 3 and 4 stars here. I ultimately opted for 3 because of the slow pace, choppy sentences, and extraneous details which I see as sloppy editing.
